Abstract

In this article we present the debate which origins were in the observations on the demographical changes, from the years 1970, in the metropolitan areas of some strongly industrialized countries –particularly, in the older metropolitan areas of North America and of certain European countries– produced by the changes in the economic system. From this time, the economics, observed as a whole, have an important change, and became from a structure based in the secondary sector to another one with dominance of the activities derived from an advanced tertiary sector.

If this tendency is confirmed, it must be modified, doubtless, some conceptions on the structure of the metropolitan areas, the center-periphery relation and the urban planning role.
