Abstract

In this article I examine Huidobro's main narrative texts (Mio Cid Campeador, Cagliostro and Tres inmensas novellas [Three Immense Novels]) in order to highlight their critical humor and parodic nuances, all of which do not necessarily refer to, or reflect, a Bakhtinian concept of carnivalization. I maintain that Huidobro novels establish an indirect relationship with popular sources and avoid the bodily material imagery, contrary to what has come to be known as the typically Rabelaisian influence. Rather than carnivalesque literary pieces, Huidobro's texts (re)create narrative models of a more rational albeit ex-centric cultural criticism during the defining years of the Avant-garde
