In this article, I present a Status Quaestionis on the evolution of conditional sentences introduced by si, from Latin to medieval Spanish. In order to do this, I have organized the information gathered through diachronic studies conducted during the second half of the twentieth century, as well as I selected current contributions related to understanding of the structure. After this overview, I bring together the knowledge concerning the nature, typology and evolution of the condicional sentences. Finally, I provide an assessment of these studies by synthesizing the findings in which there is a consensus, by identifying gaps, and by pointing out outstanding issues and projections.
