This article looks into the use schoolchildren make of inter-sentence connectors as far as this use reveaIs an aspect of children· s discoursal and textual competence: their capacity to express existing or potential relations among the sentences in the text. From a theoretical framework that associates the theory of enunciation to the theory of text structure and through the analysis of a corpus of 120 written narratives, both the intersentence system of punctuation marks and the system of connectors-organizers are examined. A poorer performance was found among children of a low socio-cultural class in terms of local coherence associated with a higher frequency of deficient use of punctuation marks in parataxis and with a higher frequency of ambiguous connections
