Abstract

The article addresses the notion of simulacrum in the novel Casa de campo by José Donoso, through Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality. To do so, it examines the adult's paradisiacal outing, the game The Marquise Went Out At Five, the figure of trompe l'oeil and the narrator's interferences. The void hidden behind the thick veil is confirmed, but the extent of simulation in the face of trauma, power and art is questioned: the novel, therefore, unfolds not as a representation of historical reality nor as simulacrum subsumed into sign, but as an archetypal allegory of the political and social structure that shapes the subject.
